Workshop Manager – Job Description
Summary
The workshop manager is a skilled maker/ builder with the leadership qualities necessary to run a busy wood and metal workshop. The role will primarily be a practical one, applying experience and knowledge to resolve design outcomes.
They will provide support to the workshop employees and directly line manage workshop subcontractors. Working closely with the Head of Production (HOP) and Technical Designers they will influence methods and workflow as demand requires, understanding the resources available to help schedule and budget upcoming work.
They will work closely with the Workshop Supervisor and be responsible for creating a safe and efficient working environment, understanding the H&S risks and committing to the measures required to reduce them. They will develop and maintain working standards in the workplace, committing to the routines and systems outlined in them. They will implement change and improvement through an understanding of company objectives and seasonal pressures.
Occasionally they will be required to be flexible, assisting other departments and working on site installations.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities
Management
Manage workflow through the workshop in line with production, deadlines and budgets
Supervise junior workshop staff as required
Manage subcontracted workshop labour
Sign off weekly subcontractor invoices
Manage and implement good H&S
Oversee workshop team and spaces, maintaining agreed working practices and communication back to HOP, Technical Designers and Project Managers
Join regular meetings to influence workflow and foresee problems
Manage records for inductions, maintenance and regular meeting notes
Provide on the job training when necessary
Understand the capabilities of team members to assign appropriate tasks
Oversee trial days for subcontractors
Administer fair and honest feedback, using disciplinary procedures when necessary
Oversee the proper use and maintenance of workshop equipment and space
Help manage and encourage general housekeeping across the warehouse
Leadership
Lead by example on punctuality, working to agreed practices and commitment to H&S
Apply a pro-active approach and maintain high levels of organisation
Assist with training, mentoring or the organisation of a mentor to less experience staff
Provide feedback and quality control through the regular checks and completion review
Innovate and introduce new skills and processes
Hands on
Prep work for fabrication – Cutting, drilling etc.
Steel and Aluminium Fabrication – MIG & TIG welding
Carpentry
Finishing – Fibreglass, filler, sanding, prep for paint
Painting – Mixing, priming, painting and lacquering
Meet targets outlined by HOP and Project Managers
Assist with complicated test assemblies and rigs in the warehouse
Assist designers and production in the realisation of decorations through prototyping
Carry out stress tests to make sure products are fit for purpose
Design Development
Develop designs of prototypes with Designers and Technical dept.
Review materials required for a project and advise on orders
Influence construction approach and methods for decoration builds
Report alterations to the construction drawings back to the PM/Technical dept.
Influence and improve agreed Drawing Standards for all technical workshop packs
Organisation
Be punctual throughout the day, adhering to start/end and break times
Carry out tea rota duties and help to keep all communal areas clean and clear
Attend weekly production planning meetings to form fabrication schedules
Agree a working space with workshop staff. Consider each person’s working method and space requirement to make sure each team member can work safely and efficiently
Make sure workshop staff have sufficient materials to complete the next phase of work
Oversee the signing out of materialstock and update HOP/ Buying
Organise material deliveries and the correct use and allocation of them
Facilitate general operational objectives that allow safe working practices
Engage in daily pack down and Friday organisation (set up for week ahead)
Communication
Update HOP/ PMs when works are complete or if issues arise
Attend Daily OPS meets with Manager and OPS manager to review operational requirements (Workspace, material organisation, workflow, tidying required)
Facilitate ongoing workshop discussions for finding solutions and problem solving
Attend weekly Workshop Scheduling meeting with HOP and Technical Dept.
Lead Workshop Weekly meeting to discuss upcoming works and stocks review
Attend Monthly dept meets and carry out H&S actions that follow
Communicate workflow with painter and manage organised handover of complete work
H&S
Enforce H&S procedures in the workshop and more generally across the warehouse
Oversee a tidy and organised working environment
Allow only inducted staff working in a safe manner to be in the workshop
Report poor H&S practices to line manager and H&S committee
Report Accident’s, Incidents and Near misses to the Buildings & H&S manager
Following the failure of machinery or tooling notify the team and isolate if appropriate
Enforce PPE in the workshop and be an advocate for it’s appropriate used across the warehouse environment
Ensure H&S and maintenance systems are recorded and up to date
Support with H&S Training days
First Aider & Fire Marshall
Assist with Toolbox talks. Expect them to be instigated by H&S Rep
Flexibility
Carry out tasks for other departments as required
Assist the Belvedere team with repairs of decorations during refurbishment. Through tooling, guidance and sometimes visiting to carry out work
Work weekend days during the busy season as required (this will be reimbursed as TOIL)
Understand minor overtime may be required to meet deadlines (part of give + take)
Work closely with Workshop Supervisor and provide cover as necessary
On Site Works
Work onsite as required
Provide practical build supervision where needed
Support other employees or management on-site
Represent the company well and uphold good H&S practices
